Whilst I always make a point of using the GRO website and/or FreeBMD, depending on the circumstances, I would also recommend the FindMyPast advanced civil birth search. They also have MMNs for many of the records that have had them removed from default display on the GRO site, and you can also use wildcards in the search fields to cover anticipated variations or mis-spellings of names.

To access the advanced search, use the Search menu on the top bar to select Birth, Marriage, Death and Parish, then from the menu on the left side of the BMD search screen, select Civil Births. Similar advanced search facilities can be obtained for various search categories throughout all the search fields on FindMyPast. They open new search screens in which there are usually additional input fields relevant to the type of search selected and they can be quite powerful.

I don't think births on the GRO site ever showed mother's maiden names after 1924, you can find them on freebmd, Ancestry, or findmypast.
