A Glasgow, Scotland shop and family.
« on: Sunday 11 June 23 01:18 BST (UK) »
Hello at RootsChat.
Could anyone point me in a good direction to eventually locate the parents and possible siblings of a great aunt (step) of mine.

Mary McCaffrey left Glasgow to marry my step-uncle Raymond Potts in Barnsley Yorkshire in 1944, her age on the church entry is 21.
Apparently Mary died "many years ago" possibly in Barnsley, but with many named Mary Potts, its hard to determine. Her death certificate would give her birth date.
However on the church entry of her marriage she gives her father as William McCaffrey, Confectioner of 86 Eglinton street Glasgow.

I cannot find anything about this address. I am thinking it was a confectioners shop and possibly the home of William and his family.
Can anyone please help locate the McCaffrey family in Glasgow?
                 Thank you.
                      Kevin.

The 1935 and the 1940 valuation rolls show William MacCaffrey as tenant of a house at 80 Eglinton Street. There does not seem to be an entry for him as tenant, proprietor or occupier of a shop. Perhaps he worked for someone else rather than having his own business.

Thank you for your quick reply with interesting information, much appreciated.
Well your findings may narrow things down, and certainly 80 rather than 86 Eglinton street will be correct as even a church entry is not always written precisely.

I had not heard of 'valuation rolls.
So we have William as a tenant, plus his surname spelling might be more correct than the church entry for Mary since the pastor would have written it in not her.
Thank you again. I have a little more to go on.

Raymond Potts (age 83)
Death Registration Date:   Jan 2006
Registration District:   Barnsley
Inferred County:   South Yorkshire
Birth Date:   20 Apr 1923

Mary Ann Potts (age 79)  Not sure if this is the correct death registration?
Death Registration Date:   Sep 2001
Registration District:   Barnsley
Inferred County:   South Yorkshire
Birth Date:   27 Jan 1922

If you search the index on ScotlandsPeople you will see there are a few possible births for Mary McCaffery in 1923/ 24. Also a few possibilities of a William McCaffery marriage to a Jane.

Thank you very much (hello again Neale1961).

Thank you for the electoral rolls information- so we now have a mothers Christian name at least! That is helpful.

Yes that's uncle Ray although I never met him. After dad was born his mother had several children with new husband Frank Potts and we saw her maybe three times until she passed.

Mary was just Mary but thank you for checking. No-one seemed to know if she re-married as Raymond did in 1975. Raymond's age on the marriage is 20 and Mary's is 21.
Mary Potts quite a common name unfortunately.

I briefly checked the link you sent and yes many possibilities. It looks like I will need Mary's birth certificate for her mothers maiden name.

William McCaffrey and Mrs. Jane McCaffrey

I think Neale is on the right track, Kevin.

Likely brother for Mary was a Joseph McCaffrey who married in the Gorbals, Govan in 1940. His parents show as William McCaffrey and Jane McClew. William, father, is showing as a confectioner.

Joseph was in the army at this time, so was in an army camp in the Edinburgh area at the time of the marriage.

So, looking at this couple. William McCaffrey and Jane Davies McClew. They married in 1917 in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.

Mary was born a little earlier than her age showed on her marriage entry. Her birth was on 27 January 1920, father William, a confectionery worker and army pensioner and Jane Davies McClew.

If you have a subs to Ancestry, there is a small tree on there for Jane Davies McClew and her family here www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/44318450/person/382442101255/facts

Just from the index, this looks to be the family on the 1921 census below in the Gorbals, Glasgow/Govan. William Snr not in the household. You would need to look at the original image on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for full details on the entry:

Jane D McCaffrey 23
Joseph McCaffrey 4
Mary McCaffrey 1
