Williams -> Werry
« on: Thursday 15 June 23 07:02 BST (UK) »
Recently, I have been researching one of my ancestors called Samuel Peter Werry. He was born on March 3rd, 1851 (I believe) in Cornwall in England.

He married a woman by the name of Jane Ann Rowe (born around 1851 in Cornwall too) around 1874 then immigrated around a decade later. He came to Fulton County, Illinois which is located in the United States.

He is listed in the United States Census of 1900:

Also in the 1910:

He then died on June 17th, 1918 in Norris, Fulton County, Illinois:

https://www.rootschat.com/links/01sdx/

He is mysterious listed as William, many times; On his death record, even on Family Trees; On many of the family trees, he is listed William for his surname. I don’t know why so I would like advice and Help.

•   1851 Samuel Peter

Elizabeth “Betsy” Williams (nee Werry)  - Burial 13 Jun 1852 – St Pinnock (age 45) abode “Herodsfoot”.

Burial for John Williams  17 Dec 1882 St. Pinnock. Age 82 yrs. Abode “Herodsfoot”.
(John had married a second wife in 1853 - Rebecca Oliver)

It looks as if a few of Samuel Peter's siblings emigrated to the USA also.

How about John and Elizabeth's parents? Also, why did their son, Samuel Peter and his child and grandchildren use the last name Werry from his mother's maiden surname?

It is not unknown that in order to receive an inheritance from a relative, the recipient is required to change their surname to that of the deceased.

It could be that a Werry/Wherry relative died and in order to receive the inheritance Samuel was required to change his surname to Werry/Wherry.  That could also have applied to his siblings.
