Help Needed with an Occupation
« on: Thursday 22 June 23 19:49 BST (UK) »
This is from the baptismal register of All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne 1679. It's two words detailing the occupation of the father. The second word is obviously 'merchant' but I can't make out the first word. Can anyone help?

decesed?

That was my first thought too.
'deceas(e)d'

Looks like this scribe does like to use his abbreviations.
