Job from census, please
« on: Friday 30 June 23 12:03 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm struggling to work out what Thomas Nicholson's job is on this 1871 census. Can anyone help, please?
I've got "Foreman Call?? at Bleachworks"
any idea what the word starting "Call" (I think it is) is, please?
Many thanks in advance lovely people  :)

Foreman Callenderer at Bleachworks.

Calenderer = textile worker. A calender is a pressing machine.

Agree with AlanBloyd.

My great grandfather was a Calander worker in the Dundee Jute Mills.

There is an image of a jute calender at this link. Although the site is related to Dundee, the image is from Calcutta. Lots of jute info at the site,

Thanks for the link AlanBoyd.

I have visited the Verdant Works in Dundee. Very informative and worth seeing if you are ever in the city.
