1843 death registration
« on: Thursday 13 July 23 16:23 BST (UK) »
I wonder what the word after “Thomas Godfrey”, the informant, reads. (Also I wonder what “occupier deceased” means, which also appears in the preceding entry?).

I thought so too, but it doesn’t really make sense. Shenton is a hamlet, near to where William Godfrey farmed at Coton. I thought maybe “occupier deceased” meant that Thomas was now occupying William’s farm, but “inmate” remains a mystery.

Perhaps William Godfrey's will may shed some light on Thomas's situation. It's available on Find my past but I don't have a subscription.

"Inmate" possibly refers to his being in hospital when he died, as such facilities would be in the care of the Workhouse at that time.

But it is the informant who is described as “inmate”. It seems that “inmate” formerly meant someone occupying premises with others, like a tenant. Thomas the informant was almost certainly William’s son Thomas, a farmer and grazier. He was William’s executor.

I don’t think Thomas would have gone into a workhouse. He was appointed executor in William’s will and received a substantial legacy, as well as being made responsible for the care of his brother John, who seems to have had learning difficulties. The will described Thomas as “of Coton”. (The workhouse was in Market Bosworth, nearer to Coton than Shenton.)

I read the will but it was difficult to understand at the front on the probate piece it mentioned £600
but I think the bequests would have come to more.....Thomas may of course have been in the Infirmary of the workhouse unwell or it may just have meant he was living in Shenton ?
