Married, Single, Widowed, or Divorced?

His response doesn’t seem to match any of those options. Any ideas? For context his wife died 3 years prior to this. So I’d think he’d have chosen widowed, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It’s a travel document. Returning from Scotland. The question is his marital status, and that’s what he wrote ^ doesn’t match any of the preset options though. I thought separate as well, but this was after his wife had passed. So unless he remarried/was with somebody unbeknownst to me I don’t know that that’s it either. Thank you though! I’ll keep thinking it over haha

He may have been separated  from his wife at the time she died.

I had a friend whose husband died while they were separated and she always said separated/divorced when ask to describe her marital status as saying she was widowed gave the wrong impression and also elicited sympathy that she found hard to deal with.

Perhaps he didn't know she had passed if they had had no contact with each other
