Old Scottish will in Latin - James Drisdall 1546 - help requested
« on: Tuesday 18 July 23 13:45 BST (UK) »
I cannot pick out any recognisable words in the attached will from the ScotlandsPeople website.

I would be very grateful if anyone could identify any place names or people in this unreadable (for me) text.

Many thanks and best regards

Can't help myself, sorry, but I think for anyone who can they will need the document split into sections. You may find you have breached copyright, too, in posting the whole document.

Many thanks for your comments.

Regarding copyright, the document is Crown Copyright/National Records of Scotland and this is annotated on the image itself. It was purchased by me and I have copied the conditions associated with the use of this image from the Scotlandspeople website and this is given below:

"All indexes and digital images available on this website [Scotlandspeople]

Individuals and organisations can use up to a maximum of 20 (twenty) NRS Crown copyright images for the following purposes without the need to obtain specific written permission from NRS or pay a licence fee:

- book, journal, magazine, newspaper, publication, broadcast
- online use limited to a maximum of 20 images per website
- display/exhibition/talk/presentation

The material must be reproduced accurately, not be used in a misleading context and NRS must be acknowledged.
"

I hope this clarifies matters.

Best regards

My bad  :-[

I was going by the copyright conditions on many other websites where only a portion for deciphering is allowed to be disseminated.

Just had time for a quick glance. The inventory was made at his father's house on 16th April 1546.
He leaves his third (the deid's pairt) to his wife and child, but neither of them is named. There are no locations mentioned (except for the father's house).

Hi GR2,

Many thanks for your input, I suspect that if there are no place names or family members mentioned in this document then it has no real value other than as a record of James Drisdall's existence & death.

Best regards

I must admit that I too was pleasantly surprised when I found out that the ScotlandsPeople website actually allows us to research & disseminate the family documents which we have paid for.

Best regards

It starts with the inventory, in Latin, "Inventory of all the goods of the late James Drysdale made at the house of his father the 16th day of the month of April 1546 before these witnesses..." None of the witnesses are Drysdales and no relationships are given. The inventory includes a horse, four plough oxen, two cows with calves, eight ewes, young sheep, two bolls of sown oats... The total of the inventory minus the debts comes to £44 3/4d Scots, the deid's pairt being £14 14/5d.

The will is written in Scots, but apart from the priest, nobody is mentioned by name. He leaves his property to his father, mother, wife and bairn. There are no placenames.

Thank you GR2,

That is very useful, if his wife, child mother and father are still alive at the time of his death then he must have died quite young, and this will help me place him in the tree.

Best regards
