Kerrane and Heveran Surname
« on: Sunday 23 July 23 07:36 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone ,
I am searching for any information on the surname Kerrane and Heveran.
As far as I am aware they are Irish surnames however would it be possible that they also link to the Vikings ancestory. Michael Frain and Mary Kerrane were my Great great grandparents.
It may be possible that Mary Heveran was Mary Kerranes mother.
I would be appreciative of any information that is more in depth if any of these names are linked to the Viking Ancestry.

Kind regards.

Hi maramataka

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What else have you managed to find on the family?

Is this Michael and Mary's marriage in 1879? She has signed as Kerans but the registrar has written it as Kearns https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1879/11060/8046347.pdf

Can't make out clearly what is written in full for witness Mary.

The family in 1901? http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Ballaghaderreen/Ballaghaderreen/1662033/

Same family in 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Roscommon/Ballaghadereen/Pound_Street/759698/

Witness Mary seems to be a relative of the priest. Mary Egan mark, was O'Stenson ?? Perhaps it was his niece/sister. Shouldn't it have been written 'Ni Stenson ?
Also entry underneath priest has written Burke. Maria has signed Bourke.
Also Kerran, Ciaron, Kieron is reputedly a corruption of Ciarson, 'son of Kerry'. Ciar means 'Black haired or Dark one'. CiarraighTo establish Norse connections you may have to go back to when it was named, see who was in power then, and whether they were dark haired. So...legends...
The Dingle peninsula, also known as Corca Dhuibhne, is reputed to be where the Celtic Milesians (Sons of Mil, Spanish) arrived and where they fought and defeated the Tuatha Dé Danann to successfully establish the culture from which the Gaelic people of Ireland were descended. In fact, Mil’s Egyptian wife Scotia, whose descendants went on to give her name to Scotland, died fighting the Tuatha Dé Danann and she is reputedly buried along with her horse just outside Tralee.
I see no Vikings, but they could have arrived later, further north, I am so sorry if you wanted them.

Looks like Mary Egan also O'Stenson.

Is the first one Peter Mahon?

i don't think this is a copy of the actual signatures......I think the name is Kearns and whoever was writing it out has had a 'moment' and spelt the second Kearns incorrectly.

Yes possibly. Then they did it again, below entry.  It's very similar handwriting to the signatures throughout. Isn't there an official explanation for transcribed certificates and the writing on them, after all these years. After all, people are seeing these and thinking they have their ancestor's signatures. Just adds to confusion. Or is it just anglicisation of the celtic names by the person who originally wrote them out.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

According to 1911 census, Mary had given birth to 13 children, 8 of whom were still living. You can search the births here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ to check for spellings but the spelling of the surname would often depend on who wrote it down.
Here is son Michael’s birth - mother Mary Kearns

I wonder if you have the parents mixed up?

Here is a birth for Michael Frayne  with parents Michael and Maria (Mary) Hefferon
