Help with figuring out an occupation please.
« on: Friday 28 July 23 12:37 BST (UK) »
Hello can anyone help with figuring out what my great great uncle's occupation is?

The previous and following census returns arent helpful as I cant find an entry for 1871 and in 1901 he is a labourer in an iron works and by 1911 a foundary labourer.

Thank you

Could you provide the census reference number please so that we can see the word in context.

I agree with Jennifer. It's useful to have a range of letters with which to compare.

It could be Labourer  with the first letter being confused by the upstroke of what is below.

This seems to be the man

So it’s the 1881 census RG 11/ 3243/112/21

Is the occupation ‘groom’ with possible a slip of the pen in the middle of the word?
The same occupation is also a couple of lines above.

I agree it's Groom.  It's much clearer on the page than on the snip.

Cabman.?
Viktoria.

But looking at the original it’s clear that the first letter is ‘G’.
