Charles A Betts - A mythical man??
« on: Sunday 06 August 23 21:03 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help me find some information regarding Charles Arthur Betts.

He appears as the father of another Charles Arthur Betts on his sons marriage certificate, dated September 8th 1907 when the son married Elizabeth Minnie Gilbert.

This seems to be his only appearance in the census.  I believe the son, Charles Arthur Betts is living in Islington in 1901 with his mother Alice Betts and his sister Ruth. Alice is living on her own means.
In 1891 Alice's children are Arthur Jnr? Charles and Ruth.

I cannot find birth details for any of Alice's children.  The only place he is mentioned is on his son's marriage certificate.  I am beginning to think perhaps he did not exist though Alice shows as a widow in the 1911 Census.

Can anyone help me find this Charles Arthur Betts, Traveller, his 'wife' was born approx 1856 in Romford Essex so I was guessing he might be a similar age.  The oldest child was born 1876  and the youngest, Charles born 1887.  Most grateful for any help or guidance.

Not much help, sorry.
Charles is 21 yrs in 1901 and 11 yrs in 1891 so born c 1880.
His brother, Arthur Jno was born in Jersey.
Maybe something to follow there.

There is a birth in Islington 1879, Charles Arthur Butts but he seems to be accounted for in 1881.

The 1907 marriage register on ancestry shows both groom and his father as Charles Alfred not Arthur?

Arthur on 1891 is Arthur Jno (ie John) not jnr

Doesn't help to find Charles snr, however there is  a school admission (20 Feb 1893) for Ruth BETTS, mother Alice, at Latchmere School, Wandsworth. Ruth's birth date is 6 Dec 1885.

When Ruth marries in 1906, she says her father is Charles, a waiter. (Ruth BETTS m Charles Edward GALTON 4 Aug 1906, at St Mark Islington.)

Probable in the 1939 register has Ruth's birth date as 26 Dec 1886.

Thank you both for all that info.... and many apologies for saying Charles Arthur instead of Alfred..

Would the different birthplace for son arthur - 1881 st lukes Middlesex , 1891 Jersey, be of any significance...
Thanks especially for that info about Ruth - will look more into that.
Regards

There is a marriage in 1879, Islington where Charles Betts and Alice Caton are on the same page.
The other couple Joseph John Baker and Emma Miriam’s might be together at 1881 228/36/21
