« on: Wednesday 09 August 23 16:58 BST (UK) »
Hi Im having trouble finding any info on my Grandmother's family and her whereabout in early census and was wondering if there is anyone with the same family in their tree

Information from certificates

18/8/1894 Middlesbrough
John Shea b1871- Father Edward Shea  Married  Agnes Fisher b1871 Father -Edward Fisher

1/10/1894  Gertrude Shea born North Ormesby Father John Shea , Mother Agnes Shea nee Fisher

25/6/1914 Middlesbrough  Gertrude Mary Agnes Shea    Father John Shea deceased
Married  James Stanley Sowden b.about  1892

13/7/1915 Redcar  Fredrick Sowden born Father James Stanley Sowden   Mother Gertrude Sowden nee Shea

6/4/1918 Middlesbrough Gertrude Sowden ( widow ) nee Shea Married John Hogan  These are my grandparents .

I cannot find a Death for James Stanley Sowden but i'm sure he had gone back to sea soon after the birth of his son  Frederick , he is on numerous crew lists for the next 20+ years

I'm sure i have all the right people but cannot find a young Gertrude , i don't know if she has any siblings

i have a Gertrude Shea daughter age 7 on 1901 census living with Edward and Mary Shea + Nellie Shea daughter ?
Then 1911 census Gertrude Shea  grandchild age 17 living with Edward & Mary Shea . i cant find any census with John and Agnes Shea

im now so confused and getting in a proper muddle

thank you for any help

It looks like John Shea died in 1894, aged only 24:

Looks like he and Agnes were not on good terms (see attached). The article was published on 7th December 1894, and he died on 22nd December.

Explains why Gertrude didn't have any siblings.

EDIT - I've requested that this be moved to the Beginners Board.

oh my goodness Quennie . thank you so much .Im really  sorry in delay replying i couldn't work my way around a new system !!

Thats is a very sad story indeed , Gertrude would have only been a newborn , i wonder now if it is her age 7 in 1901 census and she is their granddaughter and Agnes is elsewhere ??

That seems a very plausible theory to me.

I think John Shea is on the 1881 census under SHAW:

He has a sister Ellen of the right age, and father Edward (annoyingly, this census transcription is split up for some reason). However, the birthplaces of John's parents seem to differ from census to census.

I shall go down another route now and see what i can find , i certainly think Agnes has left Gertrude with grandparents ( Johns parents) and is living and possibly working elsewhere. Possibly even remarried

i feel now i do have the correct certificates , and if my original theory about Gertrude's first husband is correct both mother and daughter where left with tiny babies .

Thank you Quennie , you have been amazing finding such important information so quickly , i have a lot of new searching to do now . Hopefully Agnes went on to find happiness .

Gertrude had 9 children with my grandfather, sadly i never knew either of my grandparents

I'm glad I could help  :)

I was actually just looking for Agnes, but I wondered if you could provide a little more information?

On her and John Shea's marriage certificate, what was her father Edward's occupation? Who were the witnesses?

I see a possible match for Agnes in Ormesby; she appears to have married John Henry Hyde in 1899 as a spinster, but perhaps she lied about her marital status?

There was a lot of inconsistencies on martial status going on back then !  certainly doesn't help when you are searching .

Agnes Fisher   married 18/8/1894 Middlesbrough . 23yrs  spinster  no occupation
address 23 Campton? Street North Ormesby ...Father Edward occupation Iron? something
( on Gertrude's birth certificate it says Metal Carrier )
witnesses  E Fisher & MC Shea

Father Edward occupation Iron? something

Could it be iron moulder? That would match this Agnes' father:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27B-LMJQ

Also, the occupation of Edward Fisher on the marriage of Agnes Fisher to John Henry Hyde is moulder.

I just found Agnes and John Shea's marriage entry in the 'Middlesbrough, Old Cathedral' (a Catholic Church) register, and one of the witnesses seems to be an 'Ernesto' Fisher.

One of the witnesses to Agnes' marriage to John Hyde is an Albert Fisher. The Agnes Fisher whose 1881 census entry I linked above had a brother called Ernest and a brother called Albert. It looks like she did indeed go on to marry John Hyde after John Shea died.
