Gunter Family from Wales
« on: Friday 11 August 23 22:08 BST (UK) »
As a newbie I am still getting to grips with researching the family tree. I have managed to get back to John Gunter born  1820 Llanwenarth  Monmouth, Wales
Died March 1896 Middlesbrough, Yorkshire North Riding, United Kingdom
Married Elizabeth Hobbs in Merthy Tydfil.

His father was John Gunter BUT with no dob/ death/ place of birth for this Gunter I just can't get any further back. We know he went to Scotland to work in the iron works as he did in Wales.

Anyone else able to help please?

Have you tried a search on www.newspapers.library.wales/home
Because of the pic to text interpretation system, it is hard going to search properly, every other word seems to be mis-spelled, but a good read. nevertheless.

Thank you everyone. This is my family and quite well documented from 1861 when they went to Scotland. It's the period before this that's proving tricky.

John Gunter a Fireman living in Newbridge the son of John Gunter married Elizabeth Hobbs a servant living in Treforest the daughter of Thomas Hobbs, also a fireman, at the Tabernacle Chapel in Merthyr on the 20th July 1845. They were both of full age and the witnesses were Henry Percy and Catherine Thomas who couldn't write but made her mark. John's father's profession looks like Stamper but it is not very clear. I gather they all worked in the Iron industry.

Thank you for posting that information.   'Stamper' would probably make sense.
