Help with word in Genealogical Abstract 1627
« on: Monday 14 August 23 08:14 BST (UK) »
Betham Genealogical Abstracts 1179-1830 Family Search.  Need help with last line in the
second extract please.  ?? Co.  Not sure if this word refers to the first extract.  Would like it to
be a 'T' but perhaps it could mean in the same County as the preceding extract.  A transcription
of the place name would also be appreciated and perhaps its location.  Thanks.  Regards, Jen.

I think it's "sd Co"  - 'said County'.
You often see 'said' abbreviated to "sd'.
In this case, you can see the scribe sometimes uses a long 's' - as in 'Roscommon" and 'Sir james Craig" in the first extract.
Then the 'd' of the 'sd' just about disappears.

The place in the first extract looks as if it could be 'Barry Beg'.
That is listed here on the places in Athlone/Roscommon.

I can't see anything, having a pretty quick look in the list, that matches the places in the second extract, which looks something like
Darrickillaghin.
Perhaps you'd have better look with a more thorough search

Thankyou Goldie61 you have been very helpful  :)

Have noticed the writer of these extracts is often not clear on the spelling of place names,
this one will need more work, Irish place names are quite challenging!

I wondered if if might be "the K. Co." - the King's County, which is now known as Co. Offaly. However, I haven't found a likely townland there.

The townland (if that's what it is) looks to me like Derriskillaghin; the nearest I've found are two called Derrycallaghan, in Fermanagh and Tipperary, and Derryallaghan in Monaghan.

Thankyou Arthurk for your interest and help.  Derrycallaghan is in the correct area in Tipperary for
the John Jones of interest, I will keep this one in mind.  I was hopeful it was 'T' for Tipp. but in that
case 'the' would be superfluous.  The King's Co. seems a very reasonable interpretation to me.
This appears to be a plantation grant so King's Co. is relevant although some grants were also made
in Tipperary in the early 1600's.

Regards,
Jen.
