Tempest will
« on: Wednesday 16 August 23 19:14 BST (UK) »
I am trying to get a translation of an ancestor's will from 1708, which I downloaded from Find My Past.
It is only 10 lines long but I am unable to add it as an attachment to this site as I keep getting a message that it is too big at 1.53 MB. I tried to copy and paste but that didn't work.
Not being very technical I am not sure what I should do. I would appreciate some help please as it is the earliest will of the Tempest family.
Thank you.

If you're using Windows, you can use the Snipping Tool to select a part of the image that you want to post. Or you can download a photo-viewer such as Irfanview to resize the whole image.

There are some tips on resizing here ...

If it's only 10 lines and needs translating (from Latin?), it's more likely to be a grant of administration than a will.

Thank you for your suggestions, I will try again.

I believe you are correct about it being a grant of administration. My Latin teacher gave up on me long ago!! I wanted to see if it confirmed the relationship between John Tempest and Michael.

Is this it below? If so, it's an administration, and Michael is John's natural and lawful son. I can translate it for you later if needed.

Yes, that is the correct document. It means I can take the Tempest line back another generation. It there is anything else of importance I would be very interested.

I am most grateful for you taking the time to look at this for me.

On the twenty-second of November 1708, before Master John Husband, surrogate etc.
Michael Tempest appeared and alleged that a certain John Tempest, late of the parish of St Alkmund, Derby, died a full 14 days previously, intestate and a widower, and that he himself was and is the natural and lawful son of the said deceased, whereby he requested Letters of Administration of the goods etc. of the same deceased to be granted to him, which the lord did grant to the same Michael, with suitable security and on presentation of the usual oath.
Sworn before me, John Husband, surrogate
In the presence of [...]ttand, Notary Public

ADDED
There's an administration bond and an inventory on the following pages.

Thank you so much 'Bookbox' for this translation. It has been helpful although sadly no will, which might have given me the names of others in the family. There seem to be a number of missing records for the Tempests around this time.

With kind regards.

I see Bookbox has noted there is an administration bond and inventory connected to the document you already have.
Inventories especially may contain 'names of others in the family'. Often the inventories were taken by family members, and sometimes there are lists of debts owing or owed which again my contain people from within the family.
If you've not already done so, you need to click on the little arrow at the side of the image on findmypast, which will take you to the next image - just keep going forwards and backwards until you have all the ones relating to the person of interest.
It's always worth looking at any piece of documentation you can find - you never know what might turn up!  :)

Thank you for the suggestion about the inventories. I hadn't looked too closely at them and will revisit some of the other Tempest wills.
Unfortunately, although John Tempest had several creditors none of the names seem to connect with the family at the moment. They may be related by marriage so will try to cross check with Tempest records.
