Moses Llewellyn
« on: Monday 21 August 23 20:11 BST (UK) »
Moses Llewellyn died on December 6th. 1875 in Lan Colliery, Lower Pentyrch. He was eleven years old. I know he was the third eldest of the five children of Kindness and Samuel Llewellyn. I believe the youngest was called Lydia who  was one year old in 1875. The 1871 Census gives their address as The Old Mill, Gelynos. Same given in 1881 but I believe the family moved to live in Springfield Gardens because the local graveyard has Moses' grave monument.

I would be grateful if anyone can  locate the other siblings in the family, particularly the two who were older than Moses. I would also love to know if the older children were also miners. I haven't located the date of death of Samuel LLewellyn, the father, but wonder if he was injured in the Lan disaster and subsequently died of his injuries, or if he survived it while his son died.

It is extremely interesting to see the fine grave and head stone of Moses. Given how poor the family are likely to have been, and that some caught in  the disaster went to pauper's graves, it is curious that this little boy has such a grand memorial. Any ideas, anyone? I will attach a photo of Moses grave memorial. Thank you.  I am grateful to whoever feels able to help on this. :)

Narrwoing it down - samuel died before 1891

Kendness Llewellyn    57
William Llewellyn   30
Thomas Llewellyn   25
Richard Llewellyn   22    Clerk
Merian Llewellyn   13
Mary Llewellyn   11
Eunice Llewellyn   7/12
Lizzie Llewellyn   16

I somehow doubt Eunice is the daughter of Kindness

This seems a likely death for Samuel - the age is right

That gravestone isn;t just for Moses - there are pictures on Ancestry showing it has inscriptions for Margaret, died 8 April 1873 aged 8 days, Moses, Samuel - died 21 Dec 1888 - and Kindness, 26 Dec 1910

Mabel, Many thanks. I had some information from the family and a photo of Kindness in her later years and was trying to find more for them.  I now understand the large monument which is likely to have been put there after Kindness died. Not such poverty in this family then. The family were ultimately the bakers from whom we bought our bread. I note you have now sent that reference. It is the brothers and sisters I needed most and I can now get what I have corrected and sorted. :

Osprey
The names of the dead published in the archive papers were those who died immediately or within the period of the inquest. Archive journalists record that 'every house in the village was affected'. I have recently reconstructed the lost records of the inquest from archive papers - which give so much direct speech. There are more names there. Some men I have traced through died within the following year but their names are not recorded. There was a LLewellyn father and son who died immediately. I was interested to see if they connected to Moses' family. I think they do, but I cannot find a positive link to say so.

Mabel and Osprey, my grateful thanks. Now I have to try to re-establish my account  with the link you sent - it no longer recognises me - and keeps telling me that the password or email is incorrect - or that it belongs to someone else ... which will be me!  :) but it's an impasse right now. Again, thank you.

I am grateful to you both.

Going through the notes I see via the link Osprey sent, there is a 12 year old Ann in 1871. Your note re the grave monument gives a child, Ann, dying in 1873 - you wrote at two  days old. While families used the names of dead children for subsequent children, I'm wondering how that fits. You understand this more than I do. Are you able to help me understand this, please? N

Ignore above. Re reading the grave says Margaret. I mis copied the note. My apologies.
