Need guidance searching for Beaumont Family, Yorkshire
« on: Thursday 24 August 23 04:18 BST (UK) »
Good evening from New York, USA! I am new to this fantastic forum and searching for some advise.  I am researching the Beaumont side of my husband's family tree. He is a direct descendant from a branch of the Beaumont family that came to the United States via Rhode Island and established themselves there for the most part. There are so many in this family and I am pretty lost.
We have traced up to Giles Beaumont who per records I've found was born on 3 APR 1806 • Almondbury, Yorkshire. I believe I found his father, John Beaumont (12 OCT 1775 • Almondbury, Yorkshire), and mother Lydia Thornton (8 JAN 1772 • Huddersfield, Yorkshire) married on 9 Dec 1793 • St Peter, Huddersfield, Yorkshire.

Giles married Ellen Skyes (23 JUN 1809 • Highfield, Yorkshire) on 9 Jul 1827 • Almondbury, All Hallows, Yorkshire, had two children, Ann and Walter.  Not sure when he arrived to Rhode Island, but He married Elizabeth "Betsy" SAUNDERS* in 1831 in Rhode Island and had 9 children.

Any advice, or help on how to trace the family from Giles up would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers

Your main source will be Parish Records. Then there are likely to be MIs or gravestone inscriptions. These may have been copied by the local Family History Society for the area, which you may want to join. Most of them hold meetings by zoom these days and all have publications of local family history interest.
I did a quick check with FindMyPast and see there are quite a lot of probate records (Wills and Administrations) for the surname BEAUMONT and several lived in Almondbury.
Have a look on the trees on Ancestry. You might be lucky and find a tree which is not too full of misinformation.
If you have further queries then you might get better replies on the West Riding of Yorkshire Board. Historically Yorkshire (YKS) was divided into three parts - NRY, ERY AND WRY.

Hi

The Beaumont surname is fairly common in the  Huddersfield area .

I have a few different families in my tree. I usually go by taking note of which village or hamlet they are from.
With one from Almondbury & the other Huddersfield I would look at places like Lockwood, Slaithwaite, Marsden.

Highfield was a chapel so they might have been non conformist's but this might have been down to them being sympathetic to the luddite movement.

Morrey, Hudson, Limb

Hi,

Ellen, Walter & Ann travelled from Liverpool to New York arriving on 28th September 1847.
This can be seen on Ancestry under
New York, U.S., Arriving Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1850.
Ellen 40   Born abt 1807
Ann 21       "      "   1826
Walter 18    "     "   1829

In 1850 Census the three of them are in Smithfield District, Providence, RI.

This Late,1828 -1831 Giles should be in passenger records.

Ellen Beaumont with children Ann (12) and Walter (10) are in the 1841 census living in Almondbury with Ellen’s parents – Abraham Sykes (60) and Ellen (55).

No sign of Giles – looks as if he had already gone to USA and “married” another woman?
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Next door to them in 1850  Rhode Island
James Sykes 31 ink smudged  born England  wool sorter
Elizabeth 25   born England
Mary 2          born Rhode Island
Abraham 4/12months.

He named a son Abraham so is he a brother to Ellen or a cousin?

There has to have been recruitment for those in the wool manufacturing to come to Rhode Island
