Maxfield
« on: Friday 25 August 23 13:15 BST (UK) »
The only photographic memory I have of my Dad's dad is a memorial in Keyhill cemetery. He died soon after ww1 when my dad was 6 and I never saw him.. obs!
My dad said he was a sign writer and he worked for the new Hudson cycle company.
Many of the family worked with bikes and my grandad was put in the cycling Corps at first in ww1
They lived in Claremont Place, Brookfield Road and in Rosebery Street.
I have never seen any photos of what ithe family or places looked like.
The family moved from Sheffield to Birmingham around the mid nineteenth century.
If you have any pictures, photos or information to share I would love to know or if you can point me towards any information.
Thanks
Tony Maxfield

For somebody to help with photos/info they need to know which Maxfield was your grandfather.

You haven’t given any details of his name/birthyear etc

Were the 3 streets you mention in Sheffield or Birmingham?

Have you checked the Surname Interests Board?  Scroll to bottom of this page & link is under Tools

My grandad was Thomas Henry Maxfield born in 1884 in All Saints.
The streets are all in Birmingham near the canal.
Thank you for the info about the surname board.

Have you looked for him in census records?  I realise that won't give you any photographs but it will add to the history of his family.

If you are very lucky someone may have him on their family tree.  Old photographic sites or local history societies may also have the areas you mention on them.

His father was deceased by 1903 when he is a witness at his sister Alice's marriage.

In 1911 he is boarding with his married sister and 2 unmarried sisters and is a cycle maker.
His sister Kate is a cycle worker.

In 1901 the siblings are living with brother John so maybe both parents had died by then.

Thank you.
Does anyone know anything about the new Hudson cycle company?
If he was a cycle finisher wha would my dad say he was a  sign writer?
Would he have painted them by hand?

From Wiki:
The New Hudson Cycle Co. was originally started in 1890 by George Patterson, and manufactured 'safety' bicycles in Birmingham. In 1903 they produced their first motorcycle, but times became tough for Patterson after one of his sons died in WW1 and the other lost a leg. The family sold the factory to HJ Bructon after WW1, and in 1920 the company was reformed as New Hudson Ltd.
