Edwardian Photo - Opinions sought on what is Happening.
« on: Friday 25 August 23 16:46 BST (UK) »
This is a postcard photo of a group of spectators but I am looking for suggestions as to what the event might be.
Thanks for looking.

It obviously has religious connections - any idea where it was taken?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

AND it's not winter so could it be to do with the "Whit Walks"?

I'm not in the least religious, so I could be clutching at straws  :o

Are they the spectators?  They look more like the subject, posing for a photo. With a smattering of spectators sitting higher up in the background.  I'm seeing a procession, all girls (from what I can see), with banners that have a religious connection.

Would it be an Easter parade ?
The banners show religious images, the ladies have ‘fine’ hats. Maybe that’s them setting off from the church ?

I think the paler banner has the words "Archconfraternity of the Holy" around the top, with "Family / St Joseph's" below. Then below the image "Saint Joseph Pray For Us".

It's clearly a Roman Catholic organisation - it was founded in Belgium in 1844. A men's branch was founded in Limerick in 1868, which apparently went in for street processions. More at:

There are no clues as to where it was.
