brickmaking in South Wales
« on: Saturday 26 August 23 11:41 BST (UK) »
Most of my Gameson/Gamson forebears in Monmouthshire became brickmakers, certainly from 1820 onwards according to marriage or census records, but I cannot find any brickworks in Monmouthshire (on google) being founded before much later in the century. They were perhaps brickmaking from the 1790s in Merthyr Tydfil. Llangattock, one place where they plied this trade, was then in Breconshire. I assume there was either some association with ironworks or coalmining, or that brickmaking was a completely different new industry. Any information you have might help solve the mystery! What might be the explanation of how they worked at a trade not begun till later in that area?

Have seen several references to the link between brick making and coal mining

Surprised how little is turning up on the subject.

A quick (very) scan shows the Llanfrecha works as possibly the earliest?
