Sergeant Emmanuel Henry HARRIS (1423759) RAFVS Wireless OP Halifax MZ311
« on: Tuesday 29 August 23 14:17 BST (UK) »
I am assisting Nicholas Price, committee member of Royal Air Forces Association Cheltenham Branch UK, in his search for living relatives of the RCAF and RAF crew who perished when their Halifax Bomber MZ311 crashed into high ground near Cheltenham in the early hours of the 26th August 1944.

There is to be a memorial dedication service on 26.8.2024 on Bishops Cleeve Hill, Gloucestershire, UK, near the crash site, to mark the 80th anniversary of this sad and tragic event.

I'm also looking for a photo of Sergeant Emmanuel Henry Harris who came from Blaenavon, Wales for the memorial brochure which will be given to relatives of the MZ311 aircrew.

Also looking for photos of MZ311, and any group photos of the crew and any other information anyone might have please

Welcome to RootsChat  :D

I've found a short report on Charles Maurice Howes in the Folkstone, Hythe and District Herald dated 9th September 1944.  The heading is Killed on Active Service.  There is a photo but it is very grainy and half the face is black.

His parents and wife were:- Son of Charles and Bertha Howes, of Folkestone; husband of Rosemary Howes.

Just for the record this is his birth:-

HOWES, CHARLES  MAURICE     LEE
GRO Reference: 1921  S Quarter in ELHAM  Volume 02A  Page 2255

I can't seem to find any marriage of Charles to Rosemary.

None of the other names you listed appear in the newspapers.

Hello, and welcome to Rootschat!

The service files for the RCAF members all have photos.  I do NOT know the terms of use of the photos, but it will be somewhere on the Canadian Government site where the files are.

Charles Maurice Howes

Photos on pages 25 and 2

Elton Eugene Freeman

Photo on page 29

George William McCartney

Photo on page 47

Hugh Brannon Hamilton
https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Search?DataSource=Genealogy%7cMilitary%7cKia&FirstName=Hugh&LastName=hamilton&num=25&start=0

Photos page 3, 6, and 8

Girl Guide has noted a lack of information on George W McCartney.  His service files has letters, addresses etc, for his living father and sister.  I believe I saw he was born Scotland.  There should be enough info in his file to track him.  Apologies, but it is much too late here for me to start digging into his file!   Although some images are what I refer to as "over digitized", there are enough decent pages, especially if you magnify them to get his background.

Hope this helps.
