Finding unknown great grandfather
« on: Thursday 31 August 23 09:37 BST (UK) »
Hi.

I’m looking for help on where to start finding my great grandfather.

I have my grandfather’s birth certificate but his father’s name is not on the birth certificate, just his Mother’s. I have no family left to talk about it to.  Obviously I took on my GGM’s surname but am curious about the paternal side.

I have ordered a DNA kit so maybe that may help, but I’ll questions on that when I get the results back :)

Thanks.

You haven;t given any indication of when and where your grandfather was born. Sometimes a batism record will indicate the name of the father (or reputed father). There might also be records of child maintenance or other formal records but impossible to give more exact advice without details.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Do you have any census records for your grandfather and his mother, especially when your grandfather would have been a young child?
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Here’s a scan of the birth certificate.

I see that Caroline Beatrice married in 1940 to John C Reynolds so she and her son should, in theory, be on the 1939 register with the surname Veni.
Caroline's birth registered September 1/4 1903.

The Christian names may be significant
Sometimes women named a child after the birth father.

Hi,

I have had similar situations where they were resolved, when I bought the marriage certificate and this fortunately showed the fathers name.

He was married in 1948 in Dover  - have you the certificate?

Hi ,

Just to confirm Caroline Beatrice is on the 1939 register.

It has been incorrectly transcribed as "Vena" - there is one other entry with her which is redacted so not immediately available but presumed to be her son William K R.
