Ancestor appearing twice on the 1891 census
« on: Sunday 03 September 23 01:17 BST (UK) »
 Hi all,

I am not sure how common this is, but I have found one of my ancestors, and his daughter appearing twice on the 1891 census!

My x3 great-grandfather Lewis Price, his wife Mary and 8 children appear on the 1891 census, living  at 56 Marian Street, Clydach Vale, South Wales.

I have also found him and one of his daughters, Adelaide- visiting his father-in-law, Thomas Williams at 2-3 Williams Row, Fochriw, near Gelligaer, South Wales.

Has anyone else found an ancestor on more than one census return for the same year?

Yes, not too uncommon to find someone twice, once at their normal residence, once somewhere they were staying on census night, particularly where they were making short trips.

Per instructions the householder should have listed everyone who stayed in the house on census night, or returned to the house the next day from work or travel unless already enumerated.  You can see how there might have been some confusion!

Was he at a hotel with someone who was pretending to be his wife?  That is what makes it really interesting.

No. He was a elderly widower and in London with a male cousin. All looks very respectable but who knows.......
