Ernest John Vivyan and Lilian Mary Edith Gunter

Ernest (born 1898, Plymouth) was a great-uncle of mine. I have his naval records, passed to me when my father died; my cousin has his WWI medals. Our grandmother was Ernest's sister. I know he married Lilian, born 1900, on Aug 10th 1925, St. Augustine's, Plymouth but I can't find any information on whether or not the marriage lasted, whether or not they had children. I would have thought his wife, as next of kin, would have kept any paperwork, but apparently not;  If there's a more direct descendant in existence out there and they're interested, I'd like to pass the records on to them. My research so far has been on a shoestring budget; can't really stretch to an Ancestry subscription! I'm just throwing this out there in case anyone recognises either of the names.

No sign of Ernest in 1939 Register but there is a Lilian E VIVYAN in Plymouth with  Ellen M VIVYAN widow.
Problem is that Lilian is said to be Single.

Thank you, Spelk; what a pity. Maybe that's why we have his papers. I know he was invalided out of the RN in 1927; perhaps that had something to do with it.  Thanks for your response.

Re your post from 23.35, that's very interesting. Ellen M Vivyan, widow, was the mother of Ernest and his sister Dora. Maybe Ernest and Lilian parted company but did not divorce, and she stayed with Ellen? Perhaps he was difficult to live with after his wartime experiences, it affected people in many different ways. I wasn't aware of the 1939 register, I must have a look. Thanks again.

Ernest died in Devon in 1963 but I can't see anything for Lilian

Yes the Lilian E VIVYAN I found was born with that name and went to school in 1907 with same birth date so it is not her.

There is a death for a Lilian Mary E Vivian b 10.10.1892  death October 1983 Essex

Unfortunately - GRO online deaths have a gap from 1958 - 1983 so I can't check if her third christian name was Edith

When was Lilian born? OP said 1900. 1939 found by Carol said 1906 and now we have 1892.

It’s strange that the 1939 entry plus the 1983 death have the same second name initials & also the same birth month & day but different birthyears
