Please could someone help me to decipher Cousin ?? Busby's given name?
« on: Thursday 07 September 23 09:58 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Please could someone help me to make out the given name of Thomas Pymme's cousin ?? Busby from his 1549 will? I thought it was Joane/Jane/Jaine but if you comepare the 1st letter with the J from 'Jacket' above it looks different (although could be due to lower/uppercase)

(last word, 16th line down https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/5111/images/40611_311132-00005?pId=915585)

Thanks for reading my post.

Best wishes,
Emma

I’m no expert but I don’t see the name John there.
There seem to be five characters in the word and I can’t see an ‘h’.

Could you do a larger snip please, not all of us have access to Ancestry.

The first letter looks a lot like the ‘I’ of Item
The only name I can think of that might fit that shape, as it were, is Isaac, but really not sure.

Added…I agree, it is not a J. See James, Jacket & John elsewhere in will

I think I can almost see Isaac. Certainly, the first letter is "I", possible the last letter is "c".

(Possibly those seeing "John" are looking at the first word "Cosyn" (cousin), with the "s" appearing to have a long stroke like a modern "h" - if that makes sense.)

Thank you, it could be an I, it just doesn't seem to match with any other given names in the Busby family I am researching. In his will he calls Islington Isolden so perhaps is is a phonic name? Thanks for taking a look
