Letter in Latin, 1670
« on: Thursday 07 September 23 12:22 BST (UK) »
I hope I've managed to attach a file (if not, or if it's not suitable, then please can someone talk me through it - I have a total mental block about this!)

Anyway. IN 1670 or 1671, Gervas Pegge matriculated at Sidney College, Cambridge, and his father, Edward, wrote him an advisory letter. Some is in English, which I can manage; some is in Latin.

Please can anyone help with the Latin?

Thank you.

Someone else will probably come along with a more elegant version, but for now ...

... Joachim Fortius) with a certain heroic boldness of spirit (as far as the state of bodily health allows), and in the course and progress of studies strive for the heights of praise and virtue; and you should never consider giving up hope, for many things about the science of the earth are still lying unknown to you, just as indeed the ABC once was, for which you now see very distinguished teachers. Therefore lift up your spirits, my son, and continually ponder this within yourself – the fear of the Lord is the threshold to wisdom. Above all, worship God and humbly offer up morning prayers. Christ, splendour of the father, the only light of the great world, shine forth upon your servants with your light.

The last sentence, from the invocation of Christ to the end, appears to be a quote from the Moravian philosopher and teacher Jan Comenius

Many thanks indeed,Bookbox!

(the English part is more interesting tbh, full of exhortations not to copy his peers if they should take up dissolute habits! Sadly Gervas died young, not sure when but possibly whilst still at Cambridge so all exhortations were ultimatley in vain!)
