Deciphering occupation
« on: Friday 08 September 23 12:33 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please decipher James Wheat occupation on this the 1861 census for Hull? The 1881 census quote clearly shows his occupation as mariner
Many thanks

The first word has been crossed through, and I am not sure about it being Barque, to be honest.

The word before "Sailor" looks like it ends in ked. Looking at other words in the snip, the scribe often writes his "o" almost like an "s" (see "o" on the end of Gainsbro). Which makes me see Booked. But would that make any sense?  ???

1871 he is a Beerhouse Keeper (Steamboat Tavern).

1861 - Ancestry image is a bit clearer - BUT  :-\ :-\

I think the occupation is broken sailor. A few pages further on is a ‘boatman (broken)’.
Perhaps used in the sense of ‘in ill health’.

Draper Broker Tailor?

I agree with this. Draper is struck out and Broker Tailor replaced it.
The first letter of Draper is not the same first letter as the  first letter of the second word.
Similar Ds can be found on later pages in the same hand.
