1851 census in Devon for Lucy VICKERY
« on: Friday 09 September 05 21:16 BST (UK) »
Lucy VICKERY was born on the 27:8:1849 at Sampford Peverell in Devon. Her father was James Vickery a blacksmith  and her mother was Sarah VICKERY nee CALBOROUGH. The informant was Mary Pierce (Occupier)

On Free BMD there are no births or marriages for CALBOROUGH upto 1881 There is one death for Harriett CALBOROUGH in Dec 1872 aged 57

I cannot find any CALBOROUGHS on the 1861 or 1881 census. The only trace that I have is a babtism in Wellington (Somerset) for John and Sarah Calborough to Benjamin and Prudence both on the 15:8:1779

There are plenty of VICKERYS but James Vickery had died before 1873 (Shown as dead on Lucy's marriage certificate.) There are a few widowed Sarah Vickerys but none are conclusive.

The 1851 census would link Lucy to her parents and I could
possibly develop things from there. Her marriage witnesses were Chas and Sarah Vickery.

Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Hello Nell,
Thank you very much. Now I can go back to the 1861 census and hopefully develop the family tree.

One more request please. Can you find any Calboroughs?
It is a very unique name and probably died out by the 1880's.  Are you able to check Devon and Somerset? If not then I will post another look up.

B :D :-Best Wishes Eldon

Hi Eldon,

I've looked for CALBOROUGHs in Somerset 1851 but couldn't find any.  I think the closest was a couple of CALBREATHs  :(

I have also looked at 1841 and couldn't find any in Somerset or Devon but I have found the Vickery family with older children which might help in looking for a marriage?

Here they are:

James VICKERY 30 Blacksmith
Sarah      "        30
Julianna     "      11
Sarah       "        5
James       "       3

All born in the county
Address:  Lower Town, Sampford Peverell, Devon
HO107/0222 Folio 6 Pages 5-6

Hope this helps

Debbie  ;)

Hi Eldon

I did look Calboroughs but couldn't find any in Devon.  There were Calbreaths though.  I checked Colborough and Culborough (and with a double l as well) - zilch.

Thank you Nell and Debbie for your responses.
I have checked the 1861 census on 1837 online and could only find one member of the family (Ellen) yet Charles was at Lucy's wedding in 1873.
Plan A was to develop the Vickery line and you have both helped me do that. I will now order the Sampford Peverell church records. They should be able to tell what has happened.

Meanwhile if anyone knows anything of the surname
'COLBOROUGH' I would be delighted to hear from you.
(The name was written in capitals on the birth certificate, so I am not deciphering hand writing.)

This is a very old thread but everything in it is still relevant. I am stuck on the surname Calborough.
The informant on Lucy's birth certificate is Quote:' X the mark of Mary Pearce Occupier Sampford Peverell'. Birth was 27/8/1849 and reg. on 18/9/1849..3 weeks later.
The 1851 census reveals that Mary Pearce is unmarried 70yrs a pauper weaver living with two other elderly single pauper women, living in higher Town Samford Peverell.
All the B.Certs that I have show the informant as mother or father; and I thought that was the case, so how does Mary Pearce register the birth? Would she have to go to Tiverton or would the registrar travel to Sampford Peverell.
She could not read or write so the details would have to written down for her, and maybe the maiden name was not included, or not understood?  I am suggesting that Calborough was a guess.
The parents marriage would have taken place before the eldest child, Julianna was born circa 1830. Because everyone was born in Sampford Peverell I would imagine the marriage occurred there.
Is it please possible for someone to check the parish records for the marriage of James Vickery, Blacksmith to Sarah , both were aged as 30 in 1841.(and 43/40 in 1851)
Thank you very much for any assistance.
