After death no funeral info, possible paupers funeral ?
« on: Wednesday 20 September 23 23:16 BST (UK) »
I'm doing my family tree and have absolutely no info of my granny Maggie Boles jack who died age 40 in 1957. She lived in Stoneyburn, West Lothain.I can't find any cremation info or burial info.. Do the councils keep old records of where a paupers funeral/ cremation took place etc. My mum doesn't know what happened to her mum when she died as she was then taken into care.
Any help in which direction to try would be great, Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk shows her as Margaret Jack  & her death was registered in Uphall

Was her husband John Ferguson Jack?  What happened to him after Margaret died?  If he was her husband he only died in 1993

You can download a copy of her death cert from the site above but it won't give burial details.  It will have her actual death date & address which will enable you to make enquiries with the cemetaries in that area

I looked for Jack in the West Lothian Courier for 1957, but no funeral announcement comes up.

Yes, she was married to John Ferguson Jack. He left when my mum was born and had no contact with him.
I do have my granny's death certificate but that's all the info I can find about her death.

She died on the 18th December 1957
Thanks for replying.

Welcome from me too  :)

You could get in touch with the West Lothian Family History Society and ask for help on the search of the burial registers for that year (1957). See www.wlfhs.org.uk for how to contact them.

They have been given access by West Lothian Council to transcribe burial registers. I don't know whether they charge for this service but certainly worth making enquiries with them.

Just learning how to use this website lol...

So just back from West lothian Family history place and a lovely Jan helped with some information. So turns out my grannys name on her paperwork for her death/ funeral is wrong ..

They have her as Margaret Bowles/ Jack .. where as the correct spelling is Boles .. Jack.

She was buried in Uphall cemetery but no more info available at the moment. Jan is going to look into the discs to see if they can get a better idea of where she is.
It was most likey a paupers funeral so grave will be unmarked but hopefully i will get a better idea of where about in the cemetery she could be.

She also gave a few ideas of where to get further info about my mums fostering. So a very fruitful morning spent.
Thanks
