Alice Linskay
« on: Monday 25 September 23 03:32 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am a descendant of Alice Linskay/Linsky/Linskey/Lynsky etc. As you can see there are many variations of the spelling. Many say she was born in Kelso NSW. Her death certificate as Alice Smith states she was born in Limerick Ireland. She died in 1880 age stated as 70. She first married William Paton/Payton/Paten etc. I can't find a death for William but she married John Smith in 1852. She had five children with William Paton. Any assistance would be so much appreciated,

If Alice's age at death is correct, she was born about 1810. Unfortunately, recorded baptisms in Ireland become a bit thin on the ground before 1830.

The only Linskay (or variant) I can see at the moment - baptised around 1810 in Limerick, was a William Lynsky baptised 10 Dec 1815 in Mahoonagh/Castlemahon. Parents - Patrick Lynsky and Mary Costello.

It doesn't help much I'm afraid - maybe one of her sons was named Patrick? Mary is a rather common name to be evidence, if she named a daughter, Mary.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

I don't have evidence of Alice Linskay coming to Australia. Many have her born in Kelso 1822 but not so. I am also going by her age so if correct she was born 1810.

Alice and William Paton had 1 son Thomas and 4 daughters Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth and Rosanna.

All the children were born here with many variations to the name. They were born around the Bathurst area. I think Kelso, Carcoar and Bathurst.

I was very fortunate to find her death on Family Search only because it was documented that Alice Smith had a father Linsky.

I can't find her as a convict although some Linsky and variants are convicts.

Thank you so much everyone for comments and assistance.

Welcome to RootsChat Cherobanne,
I can see that her place of birth is Ireland on the death certificate, this information was provided by her son-in-law. Do you have any other evidence indicating where she was born? Have you been able to obtain either of the marriage certificates, which will have information provided herself. Even if this information is not on the actual transcription provided by the NSW BDM, there are ways of discovering more info through parish records. See this thread written by majm:

Modified to add:
Apologies, I see that you have the marriage certificate to William PATON, however, as indicated above, there is possibly more information to be found.  :)

I don't have any other evidence of where Alice was born. According to BDM NSW, she married John Smith in 1852 in Carcoar NSW. I will look at the thread, thank you.

Doesn't really help much, but searching the NSW BDM doesn't bring up any births or deaths for a name like LINSKAY (I tried various wildcards, there are a few LINSLEYs.) However, there is also a Sarah LINSKEY married Patrick KELLY in 1841 (area code LR which is St Francis, Melbourne (Roman Catholic). Might be worth following up to see if she is related?

I think this would be some evidence that Alice was not born in NSW, with no other family members around the time.  :-\

Both marriages and the children's births were before civil registration started so the transcription is from the church records and that is all you will find.

If she was born around 1810 that makes her quite old to be marrying for the first time and I notice that her marital status is not given on the 1842 marriage.

Do you have any of the children's marriage certs to confirm her maiden surname, especially the eldest daughter?
