Newspaper obituary of John (‘Jock’) Smith. Elgin, Morayshire
« on: Wednesday 27 September 23 11:34 BST (UK) »
I remember my late Mum kept an article from a newspaper (Northern Scot?) about her brother John (Jock) Smith after he died on 25th November 1969 in Elgin, Morayshire but it’s been lost.

Grateful if someone on this fantastic site could track it down. I think Jock was quite well known in Elgin at the time

I remember the heading was ‘An affa nice loon,’ with a cartoon sketch of a whistling lad on a bicycle if that helps. (Strange how some memories remain when I’m increasingly having CRAFT moments about far more recent events - the latest one being this morning…)

Thank you very much in anticipation!

So it does look to be the Northern Scot as you thought.

Have a look here https://secure.moray.gov.uk/eshop/home.php?cat=3  At the bottom of the page you can order newspaper copies (digital) for £1.00. Seems reasonable.

www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk have issues from the Northern Scot but the dates are 1880 - 1915. So using the Council's Heritage Services on the link above seems a good way forward.

Thank you so much MonicaL for your help. As you suggested I’ve ordered a copy of the article from the Council’s Heritage Services which is terrific value at £1.00!

Delighted to say Moray Council’s Heritage Services emailed a copy of the article to me this morning. The librarian also confirmed 4 other articles about my Uncle in their newspaper records which I can get for a £1 each which is superb value. Thank you very much Monica.
