Why Can't I find a death?
« on: Wednesday 27 September 23 19:40 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

New to this board and hoping someone can shed some light on this frustrating query. I'm trying to find a death of a child that happened in around 1937.

I have the birth certificate - I know the child died tragically being hit by a car and I have found a tiny snippet of a news story about it in a Burnley newspaper (although the event happened in Huyton, Merseyside)

But when I search the name in death records nothing comes up  and I just can't understand it

Any tips and pointers gratefully received   :)

Can you give us the name of the child?

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

After an accidental death there's normally an inquest, and depending on the circumstances that could take a few weeks, or sometimes months. The death wouldn't be formally registered until after that, so you should try looking in the following quarter or two as well.

You haven't said where you've been looking for the death, but if you can't find one, it's always a good idea to check both the GRO and FreeBMD. Also, for what was Lancashire, the Lancashire BMD site - but bear in mind that their index is separate from the GRO and can only be used for ordering certificates from the relevant local register office. Links as follows:

There is
Dec 1937 Liverpool North 8b 667
Davies, Margaret
Age 4

A report of the inquest in the Liverpool Echo, 16 November 1937. Hit by a motor car.
Daughter of David Davies, fruit porter, of 71, Ashbury Road, Huyton.

Margaret Davies was buried 19 Dec at West Derby Cemetery

Is this the Marjorie Davies, age 5, in the Burnley Express of 17 Nov?

Daughter of David Davies, fruit porter, of 71, Ashbury Road, Huyton.

David Davies is at that address in the 1939 Register
There is also
Elsie Davies, born 30 Jan 1933

Going out on a limb here!
Births
March 1933 Liverpool 8b 437
Davies, Elsie
Davies, Marjorie
Mother's maiden surname for both Davies

So they could be twins. Are the Liverpool records in 1937 wrong? And Margaret was Marjorie?

Yes, thats the family. Elsie and Marjorie were twins (Elsie was my mother-in-law) She had told me the story many years ago but I'm only now looking into the details. (She herself passed away a number of years ago.) A dreadful tragedy and it's sad to read the news articles.
