The Logan line- Scottish boarders
« on: Friday 29 September 23 14:46 BST (UK) »
Hello

This is a real shot in the dark but I was wondering if anyone could help me please? I'm looking into my great granddads maternal line - Logan. His mother was Ester Logan (b1893) and married Thomas Thompson. I have been able to trace back the line possibly to 10x GG. However, there is some information I am really struggling to confirm before I go any further.  So far I have: 7x GG Alexander Logan (b1739 - Berwickshire). I believe he is the son of Alexander Logan 8x GG (b1714 - Lauder, Berwickshire) and possible grandson of George Logan 9 x GG (b1678) moderator of Church of Scotland.  Below are the questions I have and if anyone could help I would be very grateful as I have exhausted all possible search options:

1) Did Alexander Logan 7x (b1739) have 3 siblings: James (b1758), Elizabeth (b1761) and Mary (b1753)?
2) Alexander Logan 8x (b1714) - Did he marry Elisabeth Smith and if so when/where?
3) Alexander Logan 8x (b1714) - When did he die? I have noted 1786 in Whitsome, Berwickshire but unable to confirm
4) Was Alexander Logan 8x (b1714) ever a soldier? If so, this might explain the age gaps of the children listed above.
5) George Logan 10x (b1638), (grandfather to Alexander (b1714)) I have noted he died 1670 but his son George Jr 9x (moderator of CoS) was born 1678? Could it be possible that the date of death is incorrect/mis-transcribed in the search resource e.g. Find my past etc? If so, is there a correct date recorded anywhere?

Thank you in advance

Best Wishes
Sarah

LOGAN   ALEXANDER   ALEXANDER LOGAN/   10/03/1739   EDROM
LOGAN   JAMES   ALEXANDER LOGAN/   21/05/1758   HUTTON
LOGAN   ELIZABETH   ALEXANDER LOGAN/ SMITH    10/04/1762   LADYKIRK

The only Mary I can see in Scotland on SP seems unlikely.
LOGAN   MARY ALEXANDER LOGAN/ISOBEL EWEN    08/07/1753   STIRLING

I do not see a marriage or death on SP for Alexander.

You may have seen the information below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Logan_(minister)

This makes reference to Ormiston in East Lothian.

I note the birth baptism you mention
LOGAN ALEXANDER   GEORGE LOGAN/ANN HOME    08/09/1714   LAUDER

These are birth/baptism records for Ormiston, East Lothian

Parents ALEXANDER LOGAN/ELIZABETH, or BETTY WOOD

GEORGE 26/10/1748
THOMAS 6/05/1750
CHARLES 14/06/1752
MARGARET 3/11/1754
CAMPBELL 20/03/1757
MILLER 20/05/1759
FRANCIS 27/07/1762

George Logan & his wife did have children in Lauder whilst he was minister there including Alexander but was it your Alexander?

I can follow Esther's back in Northumberland quite easily.

ALEXANDER Logan buried 11 Mar 1801 St Maurice, Eglingham, abode E.Lilburn**, age 63 (1738)
Note Lunacy
Married Jane MILLER 27 Oct 1765 same church
Childrens bapts;
West Chapel, Wooler
JOHN 9 Jan 1765
MARY 15 Jul 1768
JAMES 28 Jan 1771

I did notice a Tree has JANE Logan dying Oct 1780 and Alex remarrying Isabel Waddle 1775.

Seems unlikely to me as that Alex was a Bachelor and also don't think he would remarry 5 years before his Wife Jane died.
Also the Jane Logan buried 25 Oct 1780 Berwick was a Widow*

JANE Logan was more likely buried 10 Jan 1783 St Maurice.
Note Buried at W.Lilburn Chapel

Sorry if you have all of this.

Trish :)

Hello All, Thank you all so very much for responding. The information you have provided is really useful and some of which I did not have.  I did note that through this line that the spelling of the surname has been incorrect at times, a bit frustrating when trying to search for information.

Thank you once again

Sarah
