Springfield Prison 1901
« on: Thursday 05 October 23 13:27 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction please.

I am searching for Thomas Barnes born 1878ish in Windsor.  I have found an inmate at Springfield Prison on the 1901 census and I'd like to find out more about him.  Does anyone know where I can search more about the inmates eg the crime they were convicted off?

Thanks

Welcome to RootsChat toffee123,

I see that he was a Private (army), have you tried military records?

I agree, newspapers are a great resource, tricky though as it's quite a common name, and I guess the crime may not necessarily have been committed near Chelmsford. I had a very quick look, but nothing apparent jumped out.

I notice that another of the inmates in 1901 on th esame page as Thomas BARNES - James BROTHERIDGE - later was accused of another crime in 1903. In a report about that, he had apparently assaulted an Officer whilst in South Africa and was sentenced to a years imprisonment.

Publication: Cheltenham Chronicle

Perhaps Thomas BARNES was also in South Africa?
