John Sanderson, born 1793
« on: Saturday 14 October 23 21:58 BST (UK) »
We know from family history, gravestone and US census entries that he was born around 1793, +/- a year.  Supposedly born in Pickering, Yorkshire.
He traveled to Canada in the military during War of 1812. On his way to return to England, through New York state, he was attacked.  He stayed with a family in New York to recover, then eventually married their daughter and stayed in the US.

There were a lot of John Sandersons baptized in Yorkshire during that time.  We don't have any other information, like his parents names or if he had any siblings.  Is there a way to figure out which John Sanderson is ours through military records? Or, is there a parish that makes the most sense for a family from Pickering?

I'm in TX, and have been using primarily familysearch.org and some ancestry.com.

Thanks for any help you can provide!  Mary

A military record should it exist won't give parents names.
It may be DNA is the way forward here.

Not many SA(U)NDERSONS in the Pickering area. The only baptism I found for a John SANDERSON was in West Heslerton in 1794. Father Thomas a Labourer.

Hi, Marydi.

On FS, I came across a John Anderson christened 1794 Pickering to Robert and Ann Anderson.
Robert and Ann had a number of children in Pickering from 1788.
There is a marriage Robert Anderson to Ann Foster 1787 Scarborough.

Oh! What a tangled web we perceive,

Welcome to RootsChat Marydi.

For interest, there is an advertisement in 1830 for a John SANDERSON taking over the "New Inn, Thornton, near Pickering"
Saturday,  Apr. 17, 1830
Publication: York Herald

I realise this is not your John SANDERSON, however interesting that there were SANDERSONs in the area.

And in Pigot's Directory 1834, a carrier - "Robert SANDERSON, to Pickering from the New Globe, every Wed. and Sat."

Modified to add:
Apologies Designer Jeans, already gave the reference for the carrier, Robert SANDERSON.
