Confusing records in Scotlands People
« on: Friday 20 October 23 21:25 BST (UK) »
Hi. This is my first post here so I will test the water with this little puzzle.
I am researching my wife's Scottish half of the family tree and I have found two OPR birth records for the same person with the same parents on two dates four months apart in different places!

In the OPR image for Dundonald I have found Janet Faulds; Father William Faulds; Mother Janet Pollok; Born 19 April 1841, baptised 2nd May 1841

In the OPR image for Dreghorn I have found Janet Faulds; Father William Faulds; Mother Janet Pollok; Born 19th August 1841.

If the later one was in Dundonald then I would assume an error with the date but why is it in a different parish?

Any advice and comments most welcome!
Gary

The one that has the August date for Dreghorn is not actually a baptism.  There is no suggestion that Janet was baptised.  The writer may well have made an error with the month.  I have attached the image.

In the 1841 census the family is living in at Old Rome in Dundonald:

https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a141e4ef4040b9d6e076b66/william-faulds-1841-ayrshire-dundonald-1811-?locale=en

It records the family on the night of the 6th June 1841. The family then moved to the parish of Dreghorn and they are shown in the 1851 census at Drummuir Cottage there:

https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59027a26e9379091b119b155/william-faulds-1851-ayrshire-ayr-1810-?locale=en

Janet's younger sister Martha is listed as born in Dreghorn.

Is Janet's baptism the only one from the family recorded on that page of the Dreghorn register? Sometimes, when a later child is baptised, the baptisms of older siblings not recorded at the time were recorded along with that of the later child. When that happens mistakes with the dates can creep in. If the Dreghorn entry was made much later, it may just be that the family had forgotten Janet's baptism had been recorded at Dundonald. There is no doubt that the actual baptism took place in Dundonald and the 1841 census shows that the Dundonald dates are correct, not the Dreghorn one. Whatever happened, it was the result of the move to a new parish.

Thank you so much for the replies. I have learned a valuable lesson - check the census wherever possible!

There are no other siblings listed on the OPR at Dreghorn for the August date.

However, Family Search shows two Dreghorn register entries for the same family on the same date i.e. one for a birth and the second for a christening on the same day. Given that the census points to the birth being in Dundonald I guess there are transcription errors in FS. No images are provided.

Thanks again for letting me benefit from the collective knowledge!
