McGivern
« on: Saturday 21 October 23 17:52 BST (UK) »
Hello All, I am searching for any details or 'photos of the McGivern family that had a fairground traveling business based at Well Street in Belfast. They were distantly related to the fairground McGiverns at Warrenpoint. The names I have been given for the brach in Belfast are Patrick, John and James. They were in business from the late 1800's to at least the 1950's. Please contact Hairyhippy on this site. I am a distant relative.

Hi, I really have very little experience with Ireland, and you may already have this info.
But in the 1911 Census records, a Patrick McGivern (head) is in Belfast.
Patrick McGivern    abt 1853    County Down    Newry Street, Warrenpoint, Down, Ireland    Head
The same census narrowed to Belfast gives a number of hits that may be useful to you.
I also understand that there was a Public Records Office fire in 1922 that destroyed a lot of records.
Good luck

In reply to Seelife.  Thanks for the contact. I have seen theses already but what I am trying to do is find the link between John, Patrick and James McGivern from Belfast who ran a small fairground business from Well Street in Belfast with the larger McGivern fairground people of Warrenpoint. It is made further complicated by the fact that there were two distantly related families by the name of McGivern in the small town of Warrenpoint. Also both were headed by a Thomas McGivern! I have found a fair bit about Thomas and his brothers John and Patrick. And about Thomas's sons John and James Kevin. That Thomas had 8 children in total. I am getting there slowly but any help I can get to link the Belfast family and the Warrenpoint family would be good.

There are some good record sets covering ireland

This is one
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Looking at the censuses is a good first step and the 1901 census has 161 entries for the name McGivern in Co Antrim

Once you get further back there is Griffiths Valuation and the Tithe Applotments to search.

Also you can look for church/parish records here
https://registers.nli.ie/

I would start by looking in
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
for the various names you have.  If you have an idea of BDMs so much the better.
