General question Convicts to Tasmania Please
« on: Saturday 28 October 23 02:37 BST (UK) »
Hi to the group

A general question re Convicts to Tasmania Please...

On the convict sheet for my neighbour there is much information written by the authorities for example..Tried, date, what for, how long, hair colour, eye colour height etc...My question is..

Who told the authorities his wifes name his Fathers and Mothers name and siblings names......Im guessing that this information was from the horses mouth so to speak, and could easily be wrong for example, I have

on sheet ..Wife Elizabeth F= father Thomas M=mother Gwen 3 B=boys Wm,Joh [either John or Joseph] Rich 4 G=girls Kitty, Elizabeth Mary and Ann...for months searching for this combination, I found this...

Wife Elizabeth Father Thomas Mother Kitty [Catherine] boys John and Richard Girls "Gwen" Mary and Anne  ..Elizabeth can be the wife and grandmother...I hate assuming, however could I assume that my neighbours Thomas the convict offered this information with a little spin on it, knowing it would not be checked??

Thankyou Rick in Tasmania

Hi Wivenhoe, Ive enclosed a copy of the 1841 Wales Census with the names, but really my question was who gave the names of Thomas Richards the convict parents and siblings...on his record..
Appears the mother died having Thomas jr b 1838 where I just cannot find Thomas Richards the convict born abt 1821 and yet this is the only Family I have found with this combination of kids..maybe the authorities just wrote it down incorrect
Cheers R

What is the convict record, Tasmania, that you are looking at?  Can you identify it/them please.

Records were created before departure, during the voyage, during term of sentence..

Thomas arrived on the Eden (2) in 1842.

Wife Elizabeth F= father Thomas M=mother Gwen 3 B=boys Wm,Joh [either John or Joseph] Rich 4 G=girls Kitty, Elizabeth Mary and Ann...for months searching for this combination, I found this...

They are names of brothers (B) and sisters (S), not boys and girls.

Thomas would have given the information himself, probably verbally.  He was from near Oswestry, Denbighshire and born c1816.

They are all very common names in Wales.

Thankyou Debra,
I cannot find this Thomas Richards with this combination of siblings His records says he was 26 in 1840 =1814-1816 however I cannot find him ....
This Thomas the convict was married Anglican all these other siblings born Non conformist independant ...I guess a marriage for the father Thomas Richards snr and mother Catherine Jones would help to confirm first born Thomas the convicts age...I have in my notes a Catherine Jones 1794-1838 of Tai-teg Derwen Melin-y-wig Denbighshire but havnt been able to confirm it
cheers Rick
