Janet Cunningham - (born 1700s Scotland)
« on: Wednesday 01 November 23 05:15 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find some help on this super frustrating brick wall I have!

I have an ancestor named Alexander Reid (born 1790 in Old Monkland, Scotland and died 1867 in Scotland). His parents are William Reid and Janet Cunningham.

I am unable to find any documents to narrow down exactly which William Reid and Janet Cunningham that this person was born to. I am really trying to hone in on Janet Cunningham.

Several of my very distant relatives have a particular Janet Cunningham born to John Cunningham and Elizabeth Boyd on their tree, but when I ask them how they were able to determine that this specific Janet Cunningham is theirs, they are unable to provide with a specific answer.

I have my DNA tested with 23AndMe and uploaded to GEDMatch and MyHeritage, and am waiting on Ancestry DNA results.

If any sleuths think they can help I would be forever grateful.

Thank you!

Seems odd that if the parents of Janet Cunningham are John ...and Elisabeth Boyd ... but none of the children of William/Janet are named either of those.

Meanwhile Janet 30/03/1769 supposedly has siblings with those names. You'd think the names would show up.

Did you comb this document for clues such as Janet's parish etc?

I agree. There is a gap of seven years or so between their first and second kid — and based on naming convention, if there are children missing, it’s probably a daughter or several. But without that information, no dice. They have two daughters, Agnes and Margarate. No third daughter named Janet after the mother.

I cannot find a clue as to Janet’s parish or date of birth anywhere.

His first son is John Reid (1781), then James Reid (1788), then William Reid (1789). These three didn’t have the mother listed, but he was a laborer at a specific estate and that is listed on the birth records.

There's a second William Reid having kids in Old Monkland at the same time...

Does the baptism doc for Alexander Reid state the occupation of father William?

I believe his baptism doc says William Reid and Janet Cunningham - his is the first to list the mother. His death certificate does. His death certificate says his father was a farm laborer at Easterhouse which was true. He was also a laborer at Barrachnie. Both of which in Old Monkland Parrish nearby each other.

The first three baptism docs say the same thing.
