William Henry Sawyer
« on: Friday 03 November 23 23:00 GMT (UK) »
To many WH Sawyers born around the same time: I'm looking to trace William who was born in England between 1798 and 1803 (parents unknown). He arrived in Sydney Australia 1825-1826, had a child out of wedlock to Ann Puckeridge, they married in 1830 in Sydney... the daughter Sarah Ann Sawyer was born 27 Dec 1826. Sarah married David Palmer 1856 which ties into my Palmer side of the family!
There also was a convict transported to Australia around the same time with the same name? He also married an Ann (thought Kneebone) - in other's trees they have a daughter Sarah Ann with the same info I have ie marriage to David Palmer... which way does I go??

Hello and welcome to Rootschat
The first thing to say is not all trees are correct - but here is one tree that might give you some info - for instance William Henry Sawyer was b 6th August 1798 in London to John and Sarah - click on the link - they had THREE children before they married

Thank you, for this information, it is what I have, but I wasn't confident as other trees have William and Mary Kneebone parents of Sarah Ann Sawyer! I have the choice of a convict transported to Australia, that is okay as I have another convict in the family, or a mover and shaker in the development of Balmain (mostly) in the 1840's - plus I have done a lot of research on this fellow!

Hello Raine016 and welcome to RootsChat.

I can see at least 2 William Henry SAWYERs in Sydney at this time, one seems to be a ship owner in Balmain, the other a shoemaker in Kent St. Which of these, if either, is the father of your Sarah?  :)

This might be the one who died aged 71 in July 1870. Census records say he was born in St Marylebone. He married Elizabeth Philips in Dibden Hants in 1841. His marriage record shows his father as John. He seems to be  a little younger on his marriage record than he should be- maybe because his wife was rather a lot younger. His probate record shows his widow Elizabeth and son William Phillips Sawyer were granted probate.

The St Philips, Sydney baptism transcript for Sarah Ann Sawyer has parents as William (No middle name) and Ann,  where does the middle name Henry come from.

Maddys52, William Henry is quite a challenge - Sawyer, the shipbuilder, in Jan 1844 had become reduced to being a shoemaker in Kent Street and was soon to have his estate sequestered (excerpt from Leichhardt History Journal #24). Seems he was cunning enough to transfer his assets to his defacto wife Catherine Beckman Morgan before this occurred! So it seems that the shoemaker and shipbuilder is one of the same!
