For my local history group:
May I ask help to decipher the writing at the bottom of the attached drawing of what is said to be the ruins of the Church of Saint Mary, Darley Abbey Derby?
The drawing is of unknown provenance and although I can make out that its supposed to be the Church of St. Mary, Darley Abbey, i can't read every word. The writing doesn't look especially ancient but in 1760 the Reverend Henry Cantrell wrote to the Rev. Doctor Samuel Pegge and mentioned that in about 1712 he remembered stopping at the ruins of St. Mary's Church on Darley Hill, Darley Abbey and singing Psalms on Rogation Thursday with the church wardens of All Saints Church, Derby. The Church of St.Mary was a little far away from the rest of the abbey on Darley Hill (close to where the present St. Matthew's Church sits today).
