Death certificate question
« on: Sunday 05 November 23 12:09 GMT (UK) »
One of my family members, Robert Hughes, was a sea captain whose ship sank going from Ascension island to Newfoundland. (This was sometime in 1904 - the insurance claim to Lloyds was submitted in January 1905.) Where, if anywhere, would his death be registered? Thank you for any help you can give.

Welsh mariner's index
http://welshmariners.org.uk/search.php

search for "hughes robert" and see entries 27 and 28 (not numbered)

The Mariner's index mentions "Borth y Gest" - wondered if this might be his wife?

see col 3 - "Coffee Supper"

Thanks ever so much. That's brilliant. I had no idea he had a gravestone. His parents and three of his siblings and various other relations are all buried in a row in a cemetery in Porthmadog, so I didn't know where to look when there was no mention of him there. Diolch yn fawr.

Yes, the family lived in Borth, so that may well be his wife. My hen daid was the headmaster at the school.

It's so sad to read that a bad sign is the discovery of lifebuoys and that the owners had ceased paying wages!

More reports in Jan 1905 can be found.
