Looking for missing connection with Sean McGarry and his cousin Mary Maher
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello, my paternal grandmother Mary Maher was a cousin of Sean McGarry. She and my grandfather Patrick Spellman and her brother Martin Maher helped Sean to hide when he escaped from Lincoln prison. They hid him in the cellar in their house in Leeds, Yorkshire.
I cannot find the family connection, which I think must be a common grandparent.I Feel quite stuck and would appreciate any pointers .Thank you for reading

Hello, if he was a cousin then you have the connection already?  One of each of their parents were siblings.

You need to provide more factual information like where these people were born and when please.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Welcome to Rootschat.  Don't know the answer to your question. Was this the Sean McGarry that escaped from prison with Eamon de Valera (Irish Taoiseach for 14 years) and Sean Milroy? If it was it sounds like an interesting story!

Is this Sean McGarry born 1886 died 1958?
If so, Irish Genealogy is down for maintenance today so we can’t search for an answer just at the moment.
There is a Military Service pension file for him http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/detail.aspx#279
In case you haven’t already got it.

Looking at articles and a published tree, Sean McGarry was b Dublin 1886.
He married Tomasina Ryan in 1811.

If this is Patrick Spellman in 1911, he is from a Tipperary and Mary from Dublin.

Have you traced them back to parents?

Milliepede, thank you.Mary Maher was born in Dublin in 1870.her parents were Martin Maher and Mary Knox living in Dublin. I do not know her grandparents details.
Sean McGarry was born in 1886, married Thomasina Ryan, living in Dublin. His parents were John McGarry and Mary Kelly. I cannot find those names in my researches of my grandmothers family line.

Thank you so much everyone for all these replies, it is a great help and I will follow all of the new clues. I want to pin-point the actual relative they have in common, which is why I think it must be a grandparent.
