BMD records James Smith Skye of Curr, Scotland shown in 1841 Census
« on: Thursday 16 November 23 09:08 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find BMD or any other records for GGGGF James Smith and his wife Isabel, MS McGregor.

They are shown in the 1841 Census for Skey of Curr (Gaelic Skiath Churr, modern Skye of Curr) aged 85 and 70 respectively, both described as farmers. A frontispiece from a family prayer book in the Gaelic belonging to a son GGGF Alexander notes James Smith was a ‘Tenementer’. They possibly farmed land belonging to the Earl of Seafield’s Grantown estate.

In the 1841 Census the age of anyone over 15 years was supposed to be rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 which implies James’s age may have been up to 90 and Isabel’s up to 75.

I cannot find them in the 1851 Census or any records of their BMD in SP, and would welcome all thoughts, advice or any information from the remarkable people on this site.

Thank you!
Stuart

I wonder if this is their eldest son, 15 miles from Cromdale?

SMITH   JAMES   JAMES SMITH/ISOBEL MCGREGOR    09/01/1788
DUTHIL & ROTHIEMURCHUS

I guess this is William on the 1841 census?

SMITH   WILLIAM   OR MUNRO//E GRIGOR/SMITH MARGT MUNRO   20/06/1837   CROMDALE AND INVERALLAN

No trace of a marriage for James I'm afraid.

Thanks Colin,

WRT your first message, I haven’t been able to trace any other children apart from those you’ve identified with some very minor changes to birth and baptism dates viz -

Ronald Smith       bap  2/10/1796
Grigor Smith        born 10/4/1799
                          bap   28/4/1799
Alexander Smith   born 22/2/1806

Incidentally I have not yet discovered the parents of William Smith aged 4 shown in the Census but have some leads to follow.

Turning to your second message I hadn’t picked up this James Smith.

On first blush he could indeed be an eldest son with the patronymic and not that far from Curr. Presumably ‘Dell’ was place of birth?

Born in 1788 (see extract of his birth record) taking account of the ages of James and Isabel in the 1841 Census would mean his mother was aged between 17 and 22 with father between 32 and 37, again feasible.

My memory needs a talking to as I’ve realised that I had spotted William’s illegitimate birth with Grigor and Margaret Munro on 6/5/1837! (The date you have is of the baptism). Grigor went on to marry a Janet Cumming 4/9/1846.

Sorry, have I inadvertently deleted a message? I never fail to be astonished at my incompetence with IT.
