Attached 1788 record of James Smith’s birth and baptism - his Father was James Smith.

However one witness is also James Smith described as ‘brother to the said parent’. I dimly recall something similar on RootsChat recently but can’t track it down. In any event could this be feasible or possibly the scribe made a mistake?

Look forward to hearing from the experts, many thanks.

Just recalled there are some evocative descriptions of Duthil and Rothiemurchus and anecdotes at the very beginning of the 19c in ‘Memoirs of a Highland Lady’ by Elizabeth Grant of Rothiemurchus.

I found references to Dell which is mentioned in two birth records where my GGGF worked as a sawmiller presumably on the  Rothiemurchus estate and accounts of how important timber production was at the time as a source of income driven by high duties on imported timber during the Napoleonic wars.

Hoping someone will be able to shed some light on the plethora of ‘James Smiths’ in the parish record!
