William Brooks, 1851 census
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 23:45 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Would anyone care to offer an opinion on the attached image?

It's the 1851 census, occupation and PoB

I'm thinking he's an army pensioner, born at, or in, 'York Armoury' ?

Thanks,
Chris.

Pensioner, late 2nd life guards
York, Almmonry?

Is this Perhaps the Almonry in York? Or is it Almondbury, West Yorks?

I think the place is probably a mis-spelled Almonry (or Alms House)

Agree with - Pensioner, late 2nd life guards

Edit to correct:
Place of birth  ALMONDBURY

Good find Neale, obviously Almondbury then. Though I can't see an upstroke for a "b", perhaps his accent made it unclear to the enumerator.  :D

Thank-you all for the excellent responses.

Thanks Neale for your investigative work and the link. Great stuff. The military connection is completely unexpected, based on other aspects of the family in question.

Edit: what was the source for the information given on reply #4 ?  Birth date 19 Feb 1797 etc.
