Permitted to extend his service to 10 years with the Colours, under IAG 85 of 1863.

Appointed Bandsman 9th March 1885
Reverted from Bandsman at own request 26 June '86
Private 13 July '86
Appointed Lance Corporal 28 Oct 1887

I suspect IAG is an administrative instruction on the subject issued by the Adjutant General's office at the War Office. Soldiers normally signed on for a total of 12 years, serving 5 of them 'with the Colours', that is to say, with the Regular Army, followed by 7 years on the Reserve. However a soldier could apply to extend his service with the Colours which would be granted if he was a useful soldier.

Mint, thanks!

Does it sound like he was still in India by 1885? As there is no note to say he returned home.

Many thanks

The 2nd Battalion returned to the UK in 1889 so since he was on a 10 year engagement I would assume he came back with the battalion and was discharged from the depot, which at that point was in Beverley in the East Riding

In the same record there is a note of him being tried for disobedience, but I cannot decipher the note beneath. Attached the image if anyone can decipher it.

Many thanks

I'm guessing the first date is his return to England with the 2nd? 1st March 1889 & the following date (12 Jul 1890) was when he was discharged?

Thanks

First question.

reduced from Prov[isional] Lce [Lance] Corporal  [temporarily?] 13 June 1881 [to] 26 " [June] 1881
I can't make out the last bit.
Obviously the bottom line says Private 27 " [June] 1881  [to] 30 " [June} 1881

To be honest that doesn't really make sense.

Second question. Yes you are right. The word on the left is Reserve followed by 'tran[sferred]'  [in the rank of] Private 12 July 1890. As you can see from the top line of same extract,  his reckonable service was 10 years from 13 July 1880.
