« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 10:08 GMT (UK) »
James is documented as an early aviator both in the UK and USA. Connected to the Harvard Aero Society. Was at Hendon flying school with G. de Haviland. Aero component inventor. Served in US Mercantile Marine. Friend of Billy Mitchel. Married Amy Irving - possibly later divorced - both undertook flying demonstrations in US. He also connected to Howard Hughes. He re-married in UK and had two sons by second wife. Died in USA in 1950s. Any general info but in particular whether he had any family in the USA.

Hello oasis48portDG and welcome to RootsChat.

I'm sure you're aware there is much information and photographs about him on the internet. The National Air and Space Museum seems to hold many of his papers and scrapbooks.

There was at least one male child born to James Vernon MARTIN and Lily Irvine - in Seattle, Washington 1 Nov 1911.

This website says the son was James Hamilton MARTIN, and they also adopted a daughter Eileen, born c1920.

Modified to add:
There is this James Hamilton MARTIN born 1 Nov 1911 on a passenger list in 1937 sailing from Havre to Baltimore:

Emergency Passport application 1919 at US Embassy London - on Ancestry says he was born 31 March 1883, Chicago
Father Will Martin, who was born Topeka, Kansas and is deceased

1940 census has the son as Hamilton Martin an engineer
But he is on a shipping list in 1937 as James Hamilton Martin

I do not believe he is  the  James Hamilton Martin who died in South Africa in 1965.
Wrong age, and other details don’t fit.

It’s a surprisingly common name!

1945 census Florida has Lily and James H.
Says James was Navy and missing in action is written next to his name.
