Stewart/Stuart's in Wigtownshire
« on: Tuesday 12 December 23 14:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if there is anyone out there who has researched the Stuart/Stewart and Murray families of Wigtownshire?
I've hit a bit of a brickwall in finding my ggg grandparents- Peter (Murray) Stewart/Stuart and Elizabeth Laurie/Lawrie.My gg grandfather, James Murray Stewart/Stuart,  was born circa 1850/1851 in Newton Stewart (according to census returns - I can't find any birth record). He died in 1903 in Glasgow.  On both his marriage (1878) and death certs his parents are shown as deceased.
As 'Murray Stuart' are names which come down through the generations I was drawn to the family of John Stewart (1807-1882) & Janet Murray (1810-1878) of Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire.  They had a son, Peter, born 1836 who died in Toronto,  Canada in 1872. If this is the correct Peter then he would have only been c14 years old when James was born.
My instinct with this one is I have the correct family but that Peter & Elizabeth weren't married and Peter was sent away to Canada in disgrace. He was on the 1851 census but that is the last mention of him apart from his name on the family headstone in Kirkcowan graveyard. I haven't been able to find any records for Elizabeth Laurie, or  find James on the 1861 or 1871 censuses
Can anyone help? Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat

Can you confirm he was born 1850/51?  I see he was 52 when he died in 1903

I have checked all censuses from 1861-1901 using wildcard search for surname st*t & birthplace Newton Stewart but no James in that birthyear range with a birthplace of Newton Stewart

Did he marry Mary McGowan in Kelvin 1878

Thanks for your reply CaroleW.
His birth seems to be around 1850 or 1851. On his marriage cert (Dec 1878) he is 27 and on his death cert (Apr 1902) he is 52yrs. . He did marry Mary McGowan in 1878 (she was originally from Penpont).
The 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses (when he was living in Glasgow) show his birth town as Newton Stewart. .
I've tried all sorts of permutations for the 1850-1871 censuses and looked all over the UK - his father's occupation was given as coachman so I wondered if he was in service and might not have stayed in the one place but no luck. I also looked to see if he was living with any of the Stewarts in Kirkcowan (if my hunch is right and his parents weren't married he could have been brought up by relatives) but no luck there either!
Could be one of those times when it would be great to travel back in time and ask the question
