McSorley of Tobermore
« on: Saturday 16 December 23 15:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on the McSorley family of Tobermore (John Sr, John Jr, William, Joseph, James, Andrew, Francis, Sarah, and Betty) who came to the US in three groups between 1829 and 1833.  The last two groups traveled aboard the "Lady of the Lake" out of Londonderry.

Welcome to Roots Chat.

All Scottish family history records are on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It is free to search small fee to view original records.

I am guessing that you mean Tobermory in the County of Argyll, if so church birth records there do not start until 1824 and marriages 1830. Statutory registration in Scotland began in 1855, I do not see any records elsewhere in the County but many in other parts of Scotland.

I do not see the M*cSorley name appearing in Tobermory at all, how sure are you that is where they were from?

Welcome from me also  :)

Since you say they travelled to the US from Londonderry, maybe you mean Tobermore in Co Londonderry.

Can you give us their religion, please?

If it is the Tobermore in Kilcronaghan civil parish in County Londonderry then there are still McSorleys in the area. Bear in mind that they may have given the name of the nearest village or postal address and may have lived elsewhere in the area.
Your McSorleys left Ireland before the start of civil registration which means you would need to see what church records might be available.
If they were Catholic then the parish registers don't start until 1848-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the help.  We're not sure of their religion, but I do know that the youngest son was Catholic.

Tobermore of Londonderry appears to be the most likely choice.  On the ship manifest, there was a group of 8 from Tobermore listed together that included the McSorleys.  Other surnames were Peacock, Wallace, McKeever, and Graham.  The only adult male was John McSorley (age 60) and there were 4 children, the youngest being Margaret Wallace (age 6 mos).  Also, Mary Ann Graham (age 18) of Tobermore was listed with Jane Graham of Coleraine.

The first half of the manifest appear to be families from County Londonderry and County Tyrone; the second half are families from County Donegal (Malin, Moville, Culdaff, et al.)
